An Interview with Ian Fleming
The only surviving film or video of Ian Fleming is this 27 minute interview conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation half a year before Fleming's death. It aired on the CBC-TV program "Explorations" on Aug. 17, 1964. Apologies for the low visual quality.

"Cold Turkey" - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (surviving footage!)
Переглядів 14 тис.4 роки тому
Segments of the once-lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon "Cold Turkey" (1929) were discovered in Albany, Oregon in 2018 and have been donated to the UCLA Film & Television Archive. "Cold Turkey" dates from Oswald's post-Disney career at Universal Studios and was animated by Walter Lantz, Bill Nolan, and Tom Palmer. How the fragments came into the possession of the Greater Albany Public School ...
"Danny Deever" by Lawrence Tibbett
Переглядів 8465 років тому
A recording from 1955 of the great opera baritone Lawrence Tibbett, performing a song based on the Rudyard Kipling poem "Danny Deever" (set to music by Walter Damrosch in 1897). Apologies for the audio imperfections this is the best copy I could find. The original poem is below: Danny Deever By Rudyard Kipling ‘What are the bugles blowin’ for?' said Files-on-Parade. ‘To turn you out, to turn yo...
"What a Day" -- Don Robertson

This dreamy, gentle ballad was released in 1963 as the B-side of "The Dictionary Song" (also in this channel).
"I'm Yours" -- Don Robertson
Переглядів 1,8 тис.5 років тому
Originally written by Don Robertson and Hal Blair for the wedding scene in the Elvis film "Blue Hawaii," but not used. Elvis later recorded the song for his 1962 album "Pot Luck." This version, recorded by Robertson in 1968 and released a year later, retains the Hawaiian slide guitar that was probably in the original demo (much superior to the roller-rink organ in Elvis's version!).
"Can't Stop a Man in Love" -- Wilson Pickett (Alt. Version!)
Переглядів 5106 років тому
Recorded at Muscle Shoals on Feb. 2 1972, during Pickett's final session for Atlantic, this gem was not released until 2009. A different "official" version was released three years earlier but feels over-produced next to this hard-hitting track.
"Your Mother Is a Hippie" -- Sly and the Family Stone

Just in time for Mother's Day! A hidden jewel from Sly and the Family Stone's 1976 album "Heard Ya Missed Me, Well I'm Back." Even if your mother isn't a hippie she'll appreciate the message.
John Barrymore recites "To be or not to be"
Переглядів 6 тис.8 років тому
From John Barrymore's last film, "Playmates." The only moment of greatness in this otherwise terrible comedy is Barrymore's farewell to Shakespeare, perhaps the most moving version of Hamlet's soliloquy on film.
"The Real Casino Royale" (2006)
Переглядів 450 тис.9 років тому
An excellent BBC documentary on the creation of James Bond in Ian Fleming's first novel, "Casino Royale" (1953). "As a new film version of the book Casino Royale opens in cinemas around the world, Andrew Graham Dixon explores the crucial moments in Ian Fleming's life which inspired him to create James Bond. The documentary combines previously unseen archive footage of Fleming with dramatised re...
"I Can Feel the Fire" -- Rod Stewart & The Faces

An incendiary live performance by the Faces, from 1975. "I Can Feel the Fire" was written by Ronnie Wood and Mick Jagger and first released on Wood's 1974 solo album "I've Got My Own Album to Do." Evidently it slipped into the Faces' last live shows, as this scorching performance demonstrates. Easily the best version of the song.
Pit Bull Tows a Car, Accident Happens

After reading about the weight-pulling abilities of Pit Bulls, my roommate decided to have Nollie try to tow his car. (Pit Bulls have towed many cars before.) Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Please note, Nollie WAS NOT HARMED AT ALL. But the car was!
"Apparition in Las Vegas" by Pete Atkin and Clive James

Perhaps the best song ever written about Elvis and his fans. Music by Pete Atkin, lyrics by Clive James. From Atkin's album "A King At Nightfall," which can be purchased from his webpage at: www.peteatkin.com/hillshop.htm Lyrics: When the King of Rock and Roll sang in the desert He didn't seem to age like other men. To Vegas came the ladies with pink rinses Agog to see the dreamboat sail again....

Fleming introduced many new innovative cultural firsts: 1. Fleming used to report in the situation while happening rather than about the situation: beginning of Gonzo Journalism which Hunter Thompson lifted. 2. Flemings careful attention to "brands" like Bentley, Ritz Carlton, Ronson lighters, Dior dresses, was the beginning of brand positioning in art. 3. Flemmings casual sexual escapades and misogyny surrounded by gadgets was inspiration for Hefner and Playboy magazine. He was at the forefront of a cultural sexual revolution.
It just occurred to me that Bonds first antagonist is “The Number” and Bond himself is known to his government by a number. Likely not a coincidence.
Flemming uses adjectives like I've never heard before. Very good writer and what a life.
I have a tape of Ian Fleming and Raymond Chandler comparing their characters. Somewhere.
I'd read he did it to recover from being married.
Brilliant! Many thanks.
THANKS

While entertaining, the idea of a flashy, attention-grabbing "secret" agent makes no sense. In reality, JB would have been a liability to any agency he worked for. Real spies are invisible. They operate in the shadows and draw no attention. They often hide in plain sight. Tinker Tailor is the real set up. Procedural, plodding, full of crossed Ts and dotted i's. It is anonymous work. No medals, but maybe a small pension. Guiness really brought this out as George Smiley, in Lecarre's work. The quiet resignation tonthe idea that sgents were comprimised and killed because of a mistep, is truly disturbing.
What an absolutely great documentary. The BBC used to be so good.
IF's knowledge of the geo-politics of his time is impressive.
I believe he was foreign editor for the London Times for a number of years after the war.
If I were him in that position I couldn't resist wearing a ridicolous hat or so. ^^
Avocados are NOT pears. They may be "pear " shaped, as are some women. Avocado are in the Laurel family. Pears are in the Rose family. Saying so reveals your plebeian status.
gee only 56 imagine that
He was quite prescient about China.
Wauw!!!

Thank you so much for uploading and making this available.
You're very welcome. I only wish there more videos of Fleming to share, but this is all that survived.
The tobacco killed him.
Tobacco, alcohol, rich food...as one of Fleming's characters said, "Perhaps they will put on my tombstone 'This Man Died from Living Too Much'."
70 cigarettes per day 🚬 until his doctor persuaded him to cut down by 10 to sixty, we won't talk about all the drink,
@@barringtonsmith9147, yeah, like Bond. I was shocked, when I heard that in the audio book. And remember: no filter back then.
Love love love love
Very good documentary. It mentions how bothered Brits were by the decline of British power and influence. I think this was manifested most strongly in You Only Live Twice, in which the Brits show resentment towards America for viewing Asia as under their sphere of influence, not Britain's. Tiger Tanaka doesn't hesitate to point out the decline of the British Empire to Bond. Bond replies defensively that it was a Brit who had conquered Everest, and Brits were still winning Olympic medals. Fleming didn't think much of the CIA, Felix Leiter notwithstanding.
60 years ago, British author Ian Fleming had spent his last visit to Oracabessa on the North shore of Jamaica as the "Commander" regularly overwintered at "Goldeneye" as clockwork, arriving in late December and back in England by late March. Fleming was determined to spent his spring/summer of 1964 between his house in Sevenhampton, London and the small cottage at St Margaret's Bay right beside the white cliffs near Dover. A perfect place to visit the nearby Royal St George Golf Club in Sandwich, hoping to become club Captain in 1965. It was not to be, the summer of 1964 was tragic as his mother died in July and Ian Fleming passed away in August...
That man redefine the possibilities of what you could do with a piano
Like two different songs there, but YOU decide...
He was great no question. With a very few exceptions today they all stink.
My favvvv is :I AM WHAT I AM""..Think about that Pal....
Better rhan most until his very end...!! Real king
Intelligent, articulate. How people were back then.
His personal life had nothing to do with his talent and God given gift of music.
Ian Fleming was actually issued a Colt 1908, .25 in WWII. He kept it after the war and it is listed in his estate. Serial number 257024 . See COLT FORUM for details. The gun is listed as a Browning .25 , however the serial number does not match a Browning. I does match a Colt made in 1920. However Flemings gun could have been a FN, made in Belgium with an identical serial number as the Colt .25 ...
So much talent and beautiful wavy hair
Excellent!
Oh, yeah........
Great to see the whole interview, only clips were previously available on YT
Best of the best
With the ever-lasting cigarette
Gene is brilliant: even when Randy pauses, he never lets the mic waver, he knows there's still gas in the Savage tank.
Should have questioned Ian about the 1942 Dieppe Invasion. It was a complete fail with a 98 per-cent causality rate for Canadian troops. Fleming was a major planner😮
Fleming helped plan a commando "pinch" mission to capture a German Enigma code machine, and those commandos were part of the Dieppe Raid, which was primarily Lord Mountbatten's project. There is a theory that the raid was really a diversion for Fleming’s mission, but this has yet to be universally accepted.
Very trad. Time has moved on.
Marvellous
I was lucky enough to have played Barrymore in "I Hate Hamlet" and used this clip as a reference. I love how you can see him transform, as if he were transported back to his prime when he played Hamlet.
Wonderful documentary and a must-watch for any bond/Fleming fan
